I'm Dr. Yulinda Renee Rahman, though many people know me as Doc Yu Roc.
I'm a clinical sexologist, educator, author, researcher, and the creator of Therapeutic BDSM™ and Self-Reconciliation Therapy™. My work explores the intersection of sexuality, trauma, culture, power, identity, and healing.
But if you ask me what I really do, my answer is simple:
I help people make sense of complexity.
I've spent more than twenty-five years working alongside individuals, professionals, organizations, and communities who are navigating questions that don't have simple answers. Whether those questions emerge through sexuality, relationships, leadership, culture, trauma, or professional practice, I've found that the work is rarely about solving a problem.
It's about understanding the person.
Throughout my career, I've been drawn to the places where conventional frameworks fall short.
I don't believe human beings fit neatly into boxes, and I don't believe our lives can be understood by looking at one part of who we are in isolation.
The questions that have shaped my work are questions like:
"How does power shape the way we relate to ourselves and others?"
"What happens when our identities conflict with the expectations placed upon us?"
How do culture, trauma, and lived experience influence our relationships, our choices, and our capacity for healing?
What allows people to move from survival toward wholeness?
Those questions eventually led me to develop Therapeutic BDSM™, Self-Reconciliation Therapy™, and Power & Praxis. While each offers a different entry point into the work, they all reflect the same belief:
Understanding people requires us to understand the systems, stories, relationships, and experiences that shape them.
Human beings make the best decisions they can from the maps they currently have.
When those maps are incomplete, inherited without examination, fragmented by trauma, constrained by dominant narratives, or too small to account for lived experience, people lose access to choice. They repeat patterns that once protected them, struggle to understand themselves or one another, and often mistake adaptation for identity.
My work expands the map.
Rather than giving people better answers, I help them develop more accurate, more nuanced ways of understanding themselves, one another, and the systems they inhabit. As the map expands, new possibilities become visible.
Whether I'm teaching a graduate course, facilitating a discussion, presenting at a conference, consulting with an organization, or sitting across from someone in conversation, my approach remains the same.
I lead with curiosity.
I ask thoughtful questions.
I create space for complexity.
I believe people grow when they feel both challenged and understood.
My role isn't to tell people who they should become.
It's to help them better understand who they already are and support them in living with greater integrity, intention, and congruence.

In a nutshell, I do work at the intersection of kink, power, and clinical practice. I build frameworks, training programs, and ethical standards that help professionals engage this work in a way that is grounded and culturally aware. A big part of what I focus on is how power shows up in relationships, how people make meaning of their desires, and how we support that without pathologizing it. I’m also focused on bridging mental health and kink in a way that creates a new lane in the field.
My work has been featured through universities, professional organizations, conferences, and educational institutions. I serve as a Continuing Education provider for The Chicago School and continue to develop training programs that bridge research, clinical practice, lived experience, and community knowledge.

I'm the author of multiple books, a frequent speaker, and an advocate for culturally responsive, ethically grounded approaches to sexuality and mental health.

While I'm proud of those accomplishments, they are not what define my work.
~
What defines my work is the quality of the conversations I have with people.
~
Again and again, I've witnessed what becomes possible when people feel safe enough to explore difficult questions, challenge long-held assumptions, and reconnect with the parts of themselves they've learned to hide.
~
That's the work that continues to inspire me, and it's the work I'm honored to share with others.
Whether you're looking for advanced education, a speaker for your organization, a collaborative thought partner, or simply want to explore my work, I'd love to connect; because understanding kink is only the beginning.
Understanding people is the work.
I read every inquiry personally, and my team helps route requests so they land where they belong.
